Terms of Service
Last updated: January 30, 2026
Welcome to Word. By using our app, you agree to these terms. Read them carefully. They're straightforward, just like our app.
1. What Word Is
Word is an accountability app. You set goals, stake real money, and designate a referee to verify your success. If you fail to keep your word, your stake is donated to charity.
No refunds. No excuses.
2. Eligibility
To use Word, you must:
- Be at least 18 years old
- Be legally able to enter into binding agreements
- Have a valid payment method
- Reside in a jurisdiction where our services are permitted
3. How Commitments Work
Creating a Commitment
You define a goal, set a deadline, choose a stake amount, select a charity, and designate a referee.
Platform Fee
A non-refundable platform fee of USD $22.00 is charged when you lock in your commitment.
This fee covers access to the Word platform, including commitment creation, referee coordination, reminders, and enforcement of commitment rules.
The platform fee is not dependent on the outcome of your commitment and is non-refundable in all circumstances.
Stakes
Your stake is not charged upfront.
- If you pass, your stake is never charged.
- If you fail, your stake is charged and donated to your selected charity.
Referee Decision
Your referee is responsible for verifying whether you have completed your commitment.
By using Word, you agree that your referee's decision is final and binding, subject to the auto-failure rules below.
4. Referee Verdicts and Auto-Failure
Verdict Window
Once your commitment deadline passes, your referee is given 72 hours to submit a verdict confirming whether the commitment was Passed or Failed.
Referee Notifications
During this 72-hour period, Word may send reminder notifications to the referee, including:
- An initial notification when the deadline is reached
- Reminder notifications when approximately 48 hours and 24 hours remain
- A final urgent reminder when approximately 12 hours remain
Exact delivery timing is not guaranteed.
Auto-Failure
If the referee does not submit a verdict within the 72-hour window, the commitment will be automatically marked as failed ("Auto-Fail").
Consequences of Failure or Auto-Failure
When a commitment is marked as failed—whether by referee decision or by auto-failure:
- Your stake will be charged automatically, and
- The charged amount will be donated to the charity you selected at the time of commitment creation.
Once a commitment has failed or auto-failed, the stake is non-refundable and non-reversible.
Notifications After Auto-Failure
In the event of an auto-failure, Word will notify both the user and the referee that:
- The referee verdict window has expired
- The commitment has been marked as failed
- The user's stake has been charged and scheduled for donation
By creating a commitment, you acknowledge and accept this enforcement mechanism.
5. Cancellation
You may cancel a commitment only before your referee accepts the invitation.
Once a referee has accepted, the commitment becomes binding and cannot be cancelled.
6. Your Responsibilities
You agree to:
- Set genuine, good-faith goals
- Choose a trustworthy and responsive referee
- Accept the referee's verdict or auto-failure without dispute
- Provide accurate and up-to-date payment information
- Not use Word for illegal, abusive, or fraudulent purposes
7. Referee Responsibilities
Referees are individuals you trust to verify your commitment.
By accepting a referee invitation, referees acknowledge that:
- They are responsible for submitting an honest verdict within the allotted time
- Failure to submit a verdict within 72 hours may result in the commitment being auto-failed
Word is not responsible for referee decisions or non-responsiveness.
8. Charitable Donations
When a commitment fails, the user's stake is donated to the selected charity on the user's behalf.
Word facilitates this donation but is not a charity and does not guarantee tax deductibility.
Any tax implications are the user's responsibility.
9. Account Termination
We may suspend or terminate your account if you:
- Violate these terms
- Engage in fraudulent or abusive behavior
- Attempt to manipulate or bypass platform safeguards
You may not delete your account while you have an active, pending, or unresolved commitment.
10. Limitation of Liability
Word provides an accountability mechanism, not outcomes.
We are not responsible for:
- Your success or failure in meeting goals
- Referee decisions or inaction
- Emotional distress or financial loss from failed commitments
- Technical issues beyond our reasonable control
To the maximum extent permitted by law, Word's total liability is limited to the platform fees you have paid to us in the past 12 months.
11. Disputes
Any disputes arising from these terms or your use of Word will be resolved through binding arbitration in accordance with the rules of the American Arbitration Association.
You waive the right to participate in class actions or jury trials.
12. Changes to These Terms
We may update these terms from time to time.
Continued use of Word after changes constitutes acceptance.
We will notify you of material changes via email or in-app notice.
